Here is a little history about John Kelly, a former Millrose Member.

John began his career as an amateur boxer winning the Golden Gloves in Australia in 1953. After moving to the United States in 1959, John took up distance running. His achievements have included winning the Philadelphia Marathon in 1965; representing the United States in the London to Brighton run (54 miles); and placing 5th in the Olympic Marathon Trials in 1964.

John was one of the pioneers of ultra distance running in America and was a member of the British and U.S. Centurion Club (completing 100 miles in less than 24 hours). After serious achilles tendon injuries, John took up Race Walking and was undefeated in Masters events from age 40 to 55. He capped his career with an Olympic Berth in 1968.

John has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records for setting a record in the 120 mile Death Valley Walk (34 hours, 9 minutes in 122 degree shade and 190 degree black top road conditions). John has always shared his expertise and love for sports by coaching others. He wll be honored in Dublin, Ireland in September by having the International Race Walk Trophy named in his honor. John sums up his outstanding career, by saying "The friends that you make around the world through sports, no money can buy."
