photo of Joe KleinermanLO: How did the Millrose AA start?
JK: The Millrose AA began in 1908 as an athletic club for employees of Wanamaker's Department Store in New York City. Wanamaker stores were on 9th St. & Broadway, Wall St. and Philadelphia, PA (this team was called the Meadowbrook AA). "Millrose" was the name of Rodman Wanamaker's (son of the founder of the Wanamaker stores) country home in Pennsylvania.

The Millrose began as track and road running team. The Millrose AA started the Millrose Games, a track meet held in local armories from 1908 to 1913. In 1914 these meets were moved to the first Madison Square Garden. The Millrose Games are the oldest continuous sporting event held in the Garden.

Prior to W.W.II there was a women's track team that participated in field event, broad (long) jump, high jump, 100 yards and relays, in fact the Millrose AA women's team held the indoor track record for 440 yd relay in 1931. The women's team was disbanded during the war and women didn't return to Millrose until Katie Knight Perry started recruiting women in the early 70's. continued
