Joe breaking the tape July 1941LO: Tell us about the more recent highlights and history of the club.
JK: The Millrose AA team has won many national championships at all distances from cross country to 50 milers. Donna Hudson, Eve Avin won the 50 mile Championship. Ellen McCurtin is currently one of our best ultra runners.

In 1977 Millrose won the historic 52 London to Brighton race, the first time any non European team had ever won that famous race. The team members were Gary Muhrcke, Norbert Sander, John Garlepp. Our coach John Garlepp has won 50 mile Championship. In 1970 Millrose AA member Gary Muhrcke won the first NYC Marathon in Central Park, four years later in 1974 Dr. Norbert Sander another Millrose AA member won the NYC marathon. Both runners also won the Yonkers marathon which was the national marathon championship at that time. Dr. Sander also won the Mardi Gras Marathon in New Orleans.

Today the Millrose AA is a wonderful social organization as well as an elite racing team. Most, though not all Millrose members are on the East Coast, in the New York area. The Millrose AA women's team of Ellen McCurtin and Lorraine Gersitz recently won the 100 Km. The Millrose AA Women's Masters team just won the masters division of the NYC marathon and were awarded the best women's over 50 team at NYRRC club night in February 1998. --the end
